Is Bronchitis Contagious?

Bronchitis is a respiratory condition that occurs when the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs, become inflamed. It can be classified into acute and chronic bronchitis, with acute bronchitis being the more common type.

Types of Bronchitis

  • Acute Bronchitis

    • Often caused by viruses, similar to those that cause the common cold or flu.
    • Symptoms include coughing, mucus production, fatigue, shortness of breath, and mild fever.
    • Generally resolves within 10-14 days but can persist for up to three weeks.
  • Chronic Bronchitis

    • A long-term condition usually caused by smoking or prolonged exposure to lung irritants.
    • It is a form of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Is It Contagious?

  • Viral bronchitis: Yes, it spreads through airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing.
  • Bacterial bronchitis: Less common but also contagious.
  • Chronic bronchitis: Not contagious as it is caused by environmental factors.
